Privacy Policy

The short version

Markant does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. Your documents never leave your device. The app works entirely offline.

Data we access

Markant accesses the following data, all of which stays on your device:

  • Files you open. Markant reads Markdown (.md) and MarkBook (.mkb) files that you explicitly open. Files are read from disk and rendered in memory. No copies are made or transmitted.
  • Preferences. Your theme, content width, and zoom preferences are stored in UserDefaults on your device.
  • File timestamps. Markant reads file creation and modification dates for display in the Inspector panel.
  • Folder access. When opening files that reference images in other directories (e.g., Obsidian vaults), Markant may request folder access via the macOS security sandbox. This access is granted by you and can be revoked at any time in System Settings.

Data we do not access

  • No analytics or telemetry
  • No crash reporting (we use Apple's standard crash logs only)
  • No user accounts or authentication
  • No network requests for core functionality
  • No advertising or ad tracking
  • No data sharing with third parties

Privacy manifest

Markant includes an Apple Privacy Manifest (PrivacyInfo.xcprivacy) declaring:

  • File timestamp APIs (for file info display)
  • UserDefaults (for theme and layout preferences)

No tracking domains are declared because Markant does not contact any remote servers.

Network access

Markant has the com.apple.security.network.client entitlement to load remote images referenced in Markdown files (e.g., ![](https://example.com/image.png)). This is the only network activity, and it only occurs when a document explicitly references a remote URL. No data is sent from the app.

Children's privacy

Markant does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
